Plantar fascitis is one of the most common causes of the heel pain. Plantar fascitis is the inflammation of the plantar fascia which is a band of tissue  that extends from the heel to the toes. Heel pain typically comes on gradually, and in most cases it is on the bottom of the heel, along the inner sole of the foot. Pain is worse in the morning and after a period of rest, later on improves during the day.
